Description:
Abstract:
This map layer portrays our current understanding of the distributions of
United States and Canadian bat species during the past 100-150 years.

Specimen and capture data were obtained from a variety of data sources,
including U.S. State natural heritage programs, Canadian conservation data
centres, published literature, unpublished reports, museum collections,
and personal communications from university, federal, State and local
biologists. Records are all specimen, roost, capture, or positive visual
identification-based; no acoustic-only identifications were used for this
map layer. This map layer reflects minor changes to the July, 2002, data
set.
Purpose:
These data are intended for general prediction of possible presence of the species within a broad geographic area. Actual presence of the species can only be accurately known by actual field surveys conducted in a variety of seasons. No responsibility is assumed by Bat Conservation International or the National Atlas of the United States in the use of these data.
Supplemental_Information:
Due to confidentiality agreements to protect sensitive roosts, exact
localities may not be released, at the discretion of Bat Conservation
International data administrators.

Additional information about these maps may be found at
<http://www.batcon.org/>.

The distributed compressed file includes individual polygon files for 45
bat ranges, as well as a point file indicating the location of isolated
bat sightings.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Literature sources, museum experts, and other contributors were relied
upon for identification of species.

Data are accurate to the best of originator's knowledge. Data compilation
and checking were done manually; there is a possibility that some errors
remain. Mexican data were collected to different standards, therefore the
distributions shown for Mexico are not as accurate as for the U.S. or
Canada.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
No tests for logical consistency were performed on these data.

The data used to create this file were collected over a 100-150 year period.
No attempt has been made to separate historical from current distributions.
A positive record does not necessarily imply current residence of the
species. Records may represent either resident, migratory, or stray status.
Not all areas have been surveyed or reported on as completely as others, so
there remain gaps in the data used to compile the original occurrence file.
As more fieldwork is completed and reported upon by researchers in these
sparsely-known and sparsely-reported areas, future updates of this map layer
should improve in these areas.
Completeness_Report:
This map layer contains information on bat distribution for the 50 United
States, the District of Columbia, and the 13 Canadian provinces and
territories. No data were collected on bats of Puerto Rico or the U.S.
Virgin Islands. Species distributions within Mexico are shown only for
bats which also occur in the United States.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Due to the variety of sources used, there was varying accuracy in the
way bat records were reported. Some of the reports were as latitude and
longitude, UTM, or public land survey system coordinates. Some
locations were given as a number of miles in a direction from a nearby
town or landmark. Others were reported as just a mountain, park, or
waterway. Each location was digitized to the nearest hundredth of a
geographic degree as a single point based on the best description
provided. If no specific location was reported more accurately than
county level, the point was digitized to the center of the county,
rounded to the nearest twentieth of a degree of longitude and latitude.

Bat locality records were gathered from multiple sources, including U.S.
natural heritage programs, Canadian conservation data centres,
scientific literature publications, unpublished reports, museums, and
information provided by university, federal, State, and local
biologists. Records are all specimen, roost, capture, or positive
visual identification-based; no acoustic-only identifications were used
for this edition of the original occurrence files.

Each locality record was assigned longitude and latitude values to the
nearest hundredth of a decimal degree. Records which were not already
geocoded but which had place names were researched using the USGS
Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and the Canadian Geographic
Names Data Base (CGNDB) 1997. Records located at various distances from
place names were visually geocoded using the DeLorme Atlas and
Gazetteer for the applicable State. Records which could not be geocoded
with certainty were rounded to the nearest twentieth of a degree, as
long as the resulting rounding kept the plotted position within the
boundary of the originally reported county. Records only as specific as
county-level were assigned a value corresponding to the center of the
county according to the GNIS, rounded to the nearest twentieth of a
degree.

Records were entered into MapInfo Professional version 6.5 GIS software.
Fields for each record included species, State, county, geographic
details, observations, longitude, latitude, date observed, source type,
and source. Points were plotted and visually checked to ensure they
plotted in the correct county. The resulting files were saved in the
BatLoc database.

Process_Description:
For each species, BatLoc was buffered with a 15-mile radius around each
point locality, using the MapInfo software. The buffered data were
overlaid on digital maps of Bailey's Ecoregions of the United States,
Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) boundaries, the United States, Canada,
and Mexico. Records near possible edges of each species distribution
were scrutinized, and visually compared to MLRA and ecoregion
boundaries. Previously published regional and species-authority maps
were consulted, and bat working group and colleague input was compared.
Records of single bats (non-colony, nonmultiple-captures) that were
greater than 75 miles distant from most other points were not included
in the main range polygon(s), and were indicated as separate points
within the range files. Points were also used for records that were
considered questionable by local experts. In certain regions where few
data are available, as well as for species which are not well known or
easily captured, colleague feedback was especially relied upon. The
resulting maps were saved as BatRange.
